How to Get Rid of Oily Skin

How to prevent oily skin men

Oily skin for many men is a big concern. After all, who wants to walk around with a shiny, oily face that reflects the sun better than solar panels? Learn how to control and get rid of your oily skin.

What is the cause of oily skin in men? Underneath your skin are your sebaceous glands. These glands are tasked with the job of protecting your skin with natural lubrication called sebum (just a fancy word for oil). For most men, the sebaceous glands operate normally and add just a thin layer of oil to protect the skin. All men have a hormone in their body called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is responsible for regulating many of the functions that make you a man. This is all great until there is a higher level of DHT found in the body. High levels of DHT causes over production of sebum, leaving your face looking oily and greasy.

How to get rid and prevent oily skin for men: Now that you know why you have oil skin, we can build a daily routine that revolves around keeping the sebaceous glands from becoming overactive and creating excess oil.

Cleanse

You’ll want to wash your face with the best facial cleanser for men with oily skin twice a day; once in the morning and before you go to bed. If you notice oil pooling on your face mid-day, you can do a quick mid day cleanse with just lukewarm water over your face.

Be careful to not over wash your face, as this can excessively over dry your skin, cause excess oil production and breakouts. Your skin has a certain level of oil required to maintain its pH balance and homeostasis. When this is broken, your sebaceous glands go into overdrive, creating excess oil to bring everything back into balance.

Watch out for oily skin products containing salicylic acid or bars of soap. Both of these products contain harsh ingredients that excessively dry out the skin and as mentioned above, are counterproductive to your fight against oil.

Scrub (Exfoliate)

You’ll want to exfoliate your skin once to three times a week using the best facial scrub for men with oily skin to remove excess build up and dead skin that can accumulate on your face due to your ultra active sebaceous glands. Be gentle when using a men’s face scrub for oily skin as “over scrubbing” can dry out the face and cause irritation – both of which cause again, over production of oil.

Moisturizing

Even with oily skin, you’ll want to use face moisturizer as a thin layer will help keep your skin hydrated, preventing your sebaceous glands from going into overproduction mode. The more constantly hydrated you can keep your face, the less likely an overproduction of oil will occur.

The best facial cream for oily skin for men is oil free. Use it immediately after you wash your face in the morning and before you go to bed. The best face lotion for men with oily skin will also be very lightweight, absorbing into the skin, not sitting on top of it.

Shaving

When it comes to a smooth shave, alcohol is your foe. Alcohol is a well known skin irritant and can easily dry out the skin. The best shave cream for men and the best aftershave for men will not contain alcohol in its ingredients. Also avoid men's after shave that contains menthol. While menthol gives a refreshing “cooling” feeling, it will also excessively dry out the skin, causing excessive oil production.
